Do You Know Where You Will Lay Your Head Tonight?
Do you know that the person sitting next to you on the bus could be a homeless person? As you are walking down the street are you aware of how many people you see or encounter have no home to go to?
The scary facts as reported by the National Coalition for the Homeless, a study done in 2009 states that, "1.6 million people in the USA" are homeless. These people will sleep in abandoned buildings, cars, homeless shelters, on mattresses under bridges or spending their nights at hospitals and other places that are open 24 hours.
For the Art Project, “Do you know where you will lay your head tonight,” I propose an art quilt to be designed one square at a time, by anyone who would be interested (including homeless people themselves). Each quilt square will be a piece of art created in any artistic medium the artist desires. The squares would then be pieced together to make a final quilt. The quilt will have a social justice component, raising awareness about homelessness and the challenges faced by those who are homeless. The quilt will be displayed in a public space. This will be an on-going project and each art quilt, which not only will have artistic merit but also be functional, will be given to homeless people who are living in tents, or other places where the warmth of the quilt would be needed or the beauty of the quilt could lift spirits.
Thank-you very much,
Terri A. Catano (Just another homeless person)
A time is already in place at Advent House Ministries, on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for artistic expression and this would be where the first squares would be completed. Money from the Sunday Soup would help pay for the cost of materials to start the project. I would appreciate any feedback on this subject and appreciate the time spent in considering this proposal!
